Sentence Counter
Free online sentence counter. Paste your text to instantly count sentences, words, characters, and paragraphs, plus the average number of words per sentence.
A sentence counter goes a step beyond a basic word count by breaking your writing down into sentences and paragraphs. That's useful for meeting assignment limits, tightening prose, and spotting overly long passages that could be split for readability. The counts update live as you type, with nothing leaving your browser.
Alongside sentence, word, character, and paragraph totals, the tool shows your average number of words per sentence — a quick readability signal. Lower averages usually read more easily, while consistently high averages can hint that some sentences are doing too much and might be worth breaking up.
Frequently asked questions
How are sentences counted?
Sentences are detected by splitting your text on runs of sentence-ending punctuation — periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. Each segment that contains text counts as one sentence.
What counts as a paragraph?
Each block of text separated by a line break is treated as a paragraph. Empty lines are ignored, so only blocks containing actual text are counted.
How is average words per sentence calculated?
It divides the total word count by the number of sentences and rounds to one decimal place, giving you a quick sense of sentence length and readability.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser and your text is never sent to a server.
